A wedding DJ isn’t just a playlist with a person attached. Here are the seven things that actually separate a pro from someone with a speaker — in the order they matter.
1. Can they read a room, or just play a list?
This is the whole job. Anyone can queue songs; the skill is watching who’s dancing, testing the floor, and changing course when a song clears it. Ask a DJ to describe how they’d handle a floor that dies after dinner. A specific answer is a good sign; a vague one means they run off a spreadsheet and hope.
2. What’s actually included
"DJ" can mean a laptop and two speakers, or a full day of ceremony sound, cocktail-hour music, MC work, and setup time. Compare scope before you compare anything else — two quotes that look alike often cover very different days.
3. Do they bring backup gear?
A speaker or a laptop will eventually have a bad night. The only right answer is that backup travels to every wedding. If a DJ hasn’t thought about it, they’ll be thinking about it during your reception.
4. How do they MC?
Some DJs hide behind the laptop; some grab the mic every four minutes. You want the middle — clear announcements, warm energy, no cheesy radio voice. Ask them to walk you through how they’d run your introductions and listen for whether it sounds like your wedding.
5. Will they take a do-not-play list?
"Yes" should be instant. It’s your night. A DJ who bristles at a do-not-play list is telling you they’ll play what they want to play — and that’s a long reception.
6. Do they know your venue?

7. Have a real conversation, then trust your gut
