Questions to Ask Your Wedding DJ Before You Sign

Before you sign with any St. Louis wedding DJ, these are the questions that separate a pro from a person with a speaker.

“Have you worked our venue?”

A DJ who’s played your room knows where the power is, how the sound carries, and where the floor goes. If they haven’t, ask whether they’ll scout it. We’ve worked venues all over the St. Louis and St. Charles area, from The Thaxton to Brookdale Farms, and it shows on the night.

“What happens if your equipment fails?”

The only right answer is "I bring backup to every wedding." If a DJ hasn’t thought about it, they’ll be thinking about it during your reception instead.

“Do you MC, and how?”

Some DJs stay behind the laptop; some grab the mic every four minutes. You want the one in the middle — clear announcements, warm energy, no cheesy radio voice. Ask them to describe how they’d run your introductions and see if it sounds like your wedding.

“Can we give you a do-not-play list?”

Yes should be instant. Your night, your rules. A DJ who bristles at a do-not-play list is telling you they’ll play what they want to play.

“How do you read the room?”

This is the one that matters most and the hardest to fake. A good answer is specific: they watch who’s dancing, they test the floor with a song or two, they adjust. A vague answer means they run off a spreadsheet and hope.

Then trust your gut
